The Carnival of Misterbianco is ambassador of of Sicilian creativity, passion and culture in the world.

Participating in it means living an immersive experience in the art and traditions of our beloved Trinacria.

Behind this event there is the overwhelming enthusiasm and constant sacrifice of the Misterbianca artisans who hold high the flag of the excellence of the territory.

The local associations also collaborate with each other and with the municipal administration to offer an event that offers fun and celebrates ancient traditions in a modern way.

The history of Misterbianco Carnival has its roots in a tradition of the 1940s, akin to the Sicilian comedy of art, called “a Mascara” when local amateur theater companies performed in farces.

The mascara actors represented situations and people in a nice and caricatured way and the dialectal terms made the speck even more colorful.

In the postwar years, hard times marked by poverty and uncertainty, the tradition regained vigor and the carnival party represented an oasis of lightheartedness.

It was a rare occasion of amusement during which no one felt poor and in difficulty and an old rag was enough to dress up.

It was in that period that the taburredi, or houses that hosted masked balls accompanied by the sound of whistles and tambourines, saw the beginnings.

The taburredis in the 1950s became the “fistini”, real night clubs set up for carnival dancing parties.

In the eighties, the turning point: the creation of the first prototypes of allegorical floats is associated with the parade of spontaneous masks through the city streets.

And from here a crescendo up to the present day: thanks to the commitment of the members of the University and Professional Club, the masked balls were replaced by the parades that today make the Misterbianco Carnival one of the most famous in Sicily.

Currently the program includes the parade of masked groups and allegorical floats along Via Gramsci and the streets of the historic center, so that they can be admired in all their splendor by the public, made up of both citizens and tourists.

A real outdoor stage that attracts, amazes and conquerswith its mix of good music, entertainment, tasting of succulent typical foods and a lot of folklore.

The culmination event is the Shrove Tuesday parade in via Gramsciat the end of which the final award ceremony for the allegorical float and the most beautiful costume takes place.

Besides, it is possible to visit the museum of the “Most Beautiful Costumes of Sicily” in the city all year round, which is located at the Monaco factory.

“Sicily is the land of oranges, of the flowery land whose air, in spring, is all a perfume … But what makes it a land to see and unique in the world, is the fact that from one end to the other, it can be defined as a strange and divine museum of architecture.”
